  4.                            DESCRIPTION

  6. An easy to use tax preparation system suitable for both individuals and
  7. paid tax preparers.  Features pull-down menus, mouse support, on-line help
  8. and automatic installation.  Enter data in any order at any time, and
  9. instantly see the effect of changes on your tax due.  Each return is
  10. automatically stored in a separate file to facilitate copying and
  11. archiving.  A sample return is included to get you off to a fast start.

  13. Prints IRS-approved high-quality graphic Form 1040 on LaserJet, DeskJet,
  14. Canon ink-jet, IBM ProPrinter and Epson FX and LQ printers.  Prints IRS-
  15. approved substitute forms for all other forms on any printer.

  17. Includes the following Forms and Schedules: 1040, A, B, C, D, E, EIC, F, H, 
  18. R, SE, 2106, 2119, 2210, 2441, 3903, 4137, 4562, 6251, 8606, 8615, 8829.

  88.                            INSTALLATION
  89.  
  90.                  "Unpacking" the Distributed Program
  91.  
  92. If you received the program from a shareware distributor in "packed" form,
  93. you must first "unpack" it according to their instructions (the fact that
  94. you are reading this means either that you must have already done so, or
  95. you did not receive it in packed format).
  96.  
  97.                     Using the WINDOWS SETUP Program
  98.                   (Not included on 5 1/4" diskettes)
  99.  
  100. Place the original diskette (or diskette containing unpacked files) in drive
  101. A:, B:, or any valid path on your computer.  For Windows 3.x, from the 
  102. "Program Manager", 1) click on File, 2) click on Run, 3) type "A:SETUP.EXE"
  103. or "<path>SETUP.EXE" (without quotation marks), and 4) then press the
  104. enter key or click on the OK button.  5) answer any questions.  For 
  105. Windows 95, do the same thing but use the Run command on the Start Menu.
  106. When the SETUP program is complete, to run the program just click on the 
  107. Share-TAX/1040 icon.

  109.                   Unlocking the program under WINDOWS
  110.  
  111. When you receive the code to unlock all features of the program, just click
  112. on the Key icon and enter the data requested.  However, you may install and
  113. try out the program before receiving the code.

  115.                      Using the DOS INSTALL Program
  116.  
  117. Place the original diskette (or diskette containing unpacked files) in drive
  118. "A:", "B:" or any valid path on your computer.  Then at the DOS prompt, type
  119. "A:INSTALL", "B:INSTALL" or "<path>INSTALL", respectively, and answer the
  120. questions.

  122.                     Unlocking the program under DOS
  123.  
  124. When you receive the code to unlock all features of the program, 1) make
  125. the directory where you installed the program the current directory (e.g.
  126. At the DOS prompt type CD \STAX96),  2) Then at the DOS prompt run the
  127. INSTALL program again (type "INSTALL"),  3) Answer YES that you want
  128. to unlock the program, and 4) Then enter the data requested.

  130.                If you have a Monochrome Screen (DOS Users)
  131.  
  132. If you have a monochrome screen and you have difficulty reading it, start
  133. the program in monochrome mode by running with the /B option (run it by
  134. typing "STAX96 /B" at the DOS prompt).  This may not be necessary with all
  135. monochrome screens, but is likely to be quite necessary with some laptops. 
  136. You should then select "monochrome" on the COLOR screen, and next time you
  137. run the program it will remember your preferences without typing the "/B".

  139.                Older Computers Without a Mouse (DOS Users)
  140.  
  141. If your DOS is 3.0 or later, then the program checks to see if you have a
  142. mouse.  If you want the program to assume that you do not have a mouse, and
  143. to not even check for one, run it with the /N option (Example, at the DOS
  144. prompt type: "STAX96 /N").
  145.  
  146. For DOS earlier than 3.0, the program assumes that you do not have a mouse
  147. and will not even check for one.  The reason is that some older computers
  148. will hang with a blank screen when the program checks for a mouse.  If in
  149. this case you do have a mouse, run the program with tne /M option (Example,
  150. at the DOS prompt type: "STAX96 /M").

  154. Complete documentation is in file STAX96.MAN, which is best viewed or
  155. printed while running the program.  Select the "About/View Manual" or
  156. "Print/Print Manual" pull-down menu functions.
